The whole thing seems somewhat aimless, starting out in the forest, then an underground facility, then a mine, then another kind of cave system thing. None of it seems connected or relevant, and I doubt there is really any story. The game seems to enjoy taking a large slew of horror game tropes then sticks them all into one game for a mish mash that never seems to gell together. If they just stuck with the first story and expanded it into a full game, there could be some serious potential for it, because the first part is really solid. I may not have played much, but it is pretty hard to get myself into a game that doesn't seem to be into itself, especially not for $13.. Stay away from this folks! Don't waste your money to this thieves! Game is a bugfest, i cannot proceed at a specific point cuz i'm falling out of the map when trying to load my game. No chance to complete this game. Crap like this should be removed from Steam! My money is gone :@. Pretty good psychological horror with a few bits of survival horror and puzzle solving. Doesn't rely on jump scares for spookiness. The environments and the soundtrack make a suprisingly good horror atmosphere keeping you on edge the whole time. It's not bad for an indie game but not great either. Good to kill a couple hours if you're into the genre. You get what you pay for.. Was alright.. Its eerie.. wasnt too fond of the graphics, but it was a fun game to help pass the time. lol One thing I question is, the part when you were stuck underground, and those skelton looking creatures, had a huge♥♥♥♥♥♥... just hangin out.... was odd.. but other then that I guess Id reccomend it.. I mean you wont know if you like it until you try!. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5PWN-hiHFoIf there’s one phrase overused in horror that gets my attention almost every time, it’s “inspired by real-life events.”Really?! Which events? Tell me about these events. Real life is always more frightening than films and video games. Games and movies are simply fantasy, but when someone dangles that set of keys before my eyes, promising to blur those lines… I want to experience it. I get excited about being scared. And then 99.9999999999% of the time, I end up disappointed with the final product. It’s either naive or foolish of me to hold onto hope like that, but some day the words “based on true events” will mean something again. But not this day. Recently, I wrapped up the indie horror game Stairs, which was, as you probably guessed, inspired by real-life events. It tries (and fails) to tell the tale of a reporter who investigates the “grizzly mysteries behind three stories.”The premise sounds OK and the game started off on a strong foot. Good lighting. Decent environmental models, taking photos in what should be a closed off crime scene in a remote part of the wilderness. And then it all just sort of falls apart from there. In literature and film, stairs are always a strong source of symbolism and their usage in this game is pretty blatant. It’s a decent into madness or literally into hell. In the game they infinitely go down until you decide to stop kidding yourself and get off on a floor. But in terms of narrative structure, they’re used as duct tape to sloppily bind together 3 stories that have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Now, anthologies are nothing new to horror. Anyone can look to The Twilight Zone, or the V/H/S series or Black Mirror for great examples. But anthologies in within a single video game is rarely done. Stairs seems to attempt it, and sad to say it doesn’t succeed. The three stories told within aren’t separated with a frame story. The protagonist calls himself Christopher Adams, freelance journalist. Instead of Adams investigating one spooky story, wrapping it up using a traditional story model, going home and discovering the next spooky story, the game just chucks Adams into a singular haunted house amusement park ride experience where all three story themes are presented to the player. It’s the equivalent of The Twilight Zone trying to jam the two episodes Little Girl Lost and Nightmare at 20,000 feet into the same experience. The end result: Adams doesn’t feel like a character in this story, and his title of “freelance journalist” is an excuse to slap a camera in the players’ hands so there is something more to do in the game other than navigating the mazes. The game is billed as a psychological horror. But without proper story or character structure, how can it be a psychological horror game? Instead, this is a paranormal or even a monster horror game. It deals more with ghosts and spirits and supernatural creatures. So, the game was poorly planned and kinda mis-marketed. Was there anything Stairs did right? The developers definitely had a few good spooky ideas. But sadly they’re lost in the mess. I liked this one particular passageway as I had to slink through the little hands of these undead children in a pitch black mine. Using the camera’s night vision as your only source of light in this part of the game made me think of the popularity surge in ghost hunting shows of the recent past. Made me wonder why gaming never really tapped into that market. But most attempts this game makes to be clever often come across as annoying. Take this valve on the floor that the protagonist is embarrassingly too weak to lift. It’s just a valve. But in order to get the valve into the proper space, you need to take a photo of where it should be seated. Yeah. That makes sense. The voice acting is pretty terrible across the board. What’s weird is, some notes are read aloud while others are not. There are some messages that haven’t been translated into English. Most of the game is navigating gigantic, boring mazes in the dark. Not much really else to do. Just wander around aimlessly down long boring hallways until you figure out what the game wants you to do next. Sure, there’s a few monsters, but their AI and animations are pretty rudimentary. The game is plagued with really minor obstacles that block passageways. What made it worse was, while trying to find my way through some mazes, I accidentally went over quite a few of them and trapped myself and had to reload from a LOOOOONG time ago. I’ve died in the game a number of times from invisible threats. The game’s glitches (like invisible obstacles in normal pathways) would cause me to die.Get ready to see a LOT of recycled assets. Buildings copied / pasted. 10,000 garbage cans in the hallways. Whoever brought all these garbage cans down here had to steal an entire neighborhood’s worth. The point is… it’s a bad game. You can skip it. It’s boring. It’s not scary. It’s glitchy. If it sounds like I’m being a little harsh on an indie title, well, there’s a massive problem with that argument. Most of the scariest and revolutionary horror titles were built on a shoestring budget. Fear isn’t something that’s polished with money. It’s the art of instilling the right or, ya know… wrong messages into the mind of the viewer. Save your money or play something else.. Good game. I'm finished this game.. Please, for your wallet's sake, don't purchase this game.I can't believe how disappointed I was in this game. At first, blush, it seems spooky and edgy -- you have a little girl locked up in an abandoned factory. Much (if not most) of the game is in the dark and so there is, at least a first, a hint of horror involved.Eventually, however, what becomes stalking along cautiously in the dark becomes walking through endless corridors in the dark. The more I played the game, the more I became convinced that the term "atmopheric psychological horror" was code for "the developer either didn't want to finish the game or lost interest and so the development team had most of it take place in the dark".The story is neither original, nor compelling. I can't believe how quickly apathy and disinterest seized me. The photography -- as a journalist you are supposed to snap pictures of certain views, objects, and scenes -- seem pointless and don't serve to move the story forward. Would it have been that difficult to just put the task of taking photos on the player and then the game itself rated the "quality" of the photos? There is at least one other game that does this and it would have been infinitely more interesting. The puzzles, what few there are, seem as pointless as the plot. So why exactly does this dude have a safe in the basement of the factory? And why exactly does he have the code scattered around where he can't possibly find it? What's that you say? Yes, this is nothing new for a puzzler -- quite often the solutions seem unrealistic or the scenarios unbelievable. But this just highlights the frustration with this game -- you can't even suspend the basic level of disbelief that you need to order to play a puzzler.I will continue to play this game to the end only, ONLY, because I paid for it. It is a waste of time and money -- I'm angry that I paid $7 for it, I can't imagine how♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥off I would be if I paid $14 or $15.Step away from the keyboard!. This game is interesting. The story is different and intriguing, the style of story telling is nice. I enjoyed playing it, but this game does have quite a few issues at the moment. The game crashed multiple times, glitched out a lot, and the camera/NV wouldn't work sometimes. The game built great atmosphere and kept the tension for large stretches. For the price, without a doubt you should buy it.I would rate this a 6/10. Average game that could have been better, but for the price is worth checking out. I streamed this live on my twitch channel, and I am also uploading the playthrough to my youtube channel.twitch.tv/gfox_1youtube.com/gfoxgamesandmovies
